Megxit is the nickname given to Harry and Meghan’s shock decision to move away from their duties and positions as senior royals.
The couple shared a statement on January 8, in 2020, where they explained they wished to take a step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and eventually become financially independent.
Unsurprisingly, the media went wild.
Blending the name “Meghan” and “exit,” the nickname was modeled after terms like “Brexit.”
British tabloid The Sun is widely credited with first using the term “Megxit” in a headline on January 9, 2020.
BBC News later pointed out that “Sussexit” was trending on social media, however it didn’t really make the same impact.
