In an extraordinary act of generosity, Canadian hockey icon Connor McDavid has announced he is donating his entire $12.9 million in bonuses and sponsorship earnings to fund a network of homeless support centers in Edmonton, the city he’s proudly called home throughout his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers.
The initiative, unveiled at an emotional press conference earlier today, will create 150 permanent housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds across the city — offering warmth, safety, and stability to those struggling to survive Alberta’s punishing winters.
> “I’ve seen people trying to survive the brutal Canadian winters without a roof over their heads, and I promised myself that if I ever had the chance, I’d step up,” McDavid told reporters, his voice thick with emotion. “No one should have to sleep outside in that kind of cold.”
The project will partner with local non-profits and housing authorities, combining McDavid’s donation with municipal support to fast-track construction. In addition to housing, the centers will offer job training programs, addiction recovery services, and mental health counseling, aiming to give residents more than just a roof — but also a path forward.
Mayor Amarjeet Sohi praised McDavid’s commitment, calling it “a moment that will be remembered in Edmonton for generations.”
Construction is set to begin within weeks, with the first units expected to open before the next winter season.
