Princess Tatiana of Greece has broken her silence on her shocking divorce from her royal husband, Prince Nikolaos. The royal has faced a challenging year, splitting from the Prince in April, shortly followed by the devastating news that her stepbrother, Attilio Brillembourg, had been reported missing. The 44-year-old, a former publicist from Venezuela, spoke candidly of the ‘avalanche of changes’ that have befallen her since the Spring, telling the Greek publication BHMagazino that her year has been one of ‘uncertainty and pain’.
Everything happened at the same time,’ the Princess said. ‘It was like an avalanche of changes in front of everyone.’ The support of her family, she explained, had been an invaluable pillar of strength in these most trying of times.
‘I think it is in adversity that we often find our deepest strength. Life’s challenges remind me how important it is to persevere, to have hope and faith in the power of the human spirit.’ll
Princess Tatiana, a frequent guest at Giorgio Armani fronts rows and Vanity Fair parties in New York, kept her royal title in the wake of her split from Nikolaos of Greece after 14 years of marriage. Once nicknamed the ‘playboy prince’, Nikolaos is the third child of the last King of Greece Constantine II of Greece, who was a close friend of King Charles and the late Duke of Edinburgh. The final monarch of the country passed away in January 2023 at the age of 82 after suffering a stroke. Nikolaos and Tatiana do not have any children, but the Prince is the uncle of the family’s starriest socialites, including Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece.
This decision was reached with great care and mutual respect, reflecting the depth of their appreciation for one another and the moments they have shared.’ The statement continued, ‘Their future interactions will continue to be guided by these same principles of respect and understanding, as they transition into a relationship rooted in a strong friendship. They will continue to live and build their lives in Greece, a place they both call home. The Family will always support them.’
Famous for attending extravagant parties with the likes of Jemima Khan and Elle Macpherson, Prince Nikolaos of Greece is known to be one of the most social and stylish royals on the scene. His wedding to Princess Tatiana was dubbed ‘Mamma Mia, with aristocrats’.
After the pomp and ceremony though, the new royal admitted that she was finding adjustment to the gilded life of European monarchy somewhat challenging. ‘I do not feel like a princess. I do not feel that I married a prince, with a title. Well actually, yes, he is my prince, but nothing more.’
Indeed, the image of a playboy prince and his glittering bride was a false one, Tatiana told Vogue. ‘I live a very simple life here,’ she explained after moving back to Greece with her husband. ‘I work, I go to the supermarket, I cook, I walk my dog, and the Greek people have welcomed me like they would anyone else.’
This domestic idyll, however, was shattered when it was announced that Princess Tatiana’s stepbrother, Attilio Brillembourg, had been declared missing – just a month after her divorce. Per Hello, Brillembourg was last seen in Malibu in the early hours of 18 May. His father, with whom he shares a name, is Tatiana’s stepfather, having married her mother, Marie Blanche Bierlein. According to a missing person’s report from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, there are ‘concerns’ for his ‘well being’. At the time of writing, he has not yet been found.
No doubt that Princess Tatiana’s family and friends will be offering her some much needed support, and that royal watchers everywhere will be keeping her in their thoughts.
